Common Questions About Our Workshop

This workshop is perfect for couples, friends, and solo travelers—whether you’re a photographer or just love exploring new places. Our trips are designed to be immersive and enjoyable, even if you’re not participating in every photography session.

Who are my guides?

Our trip leaders, John Devaney and Jennifer Heffner, are professional photographers with extensive experience teaching photography. Both bring a wealth of knowledge, not only in photography but also in the art of teaching and capturing the essence of a place. With backgrounds in commercial, event, and travel photography, they provide hands-on instruction in the field, ensuring that participants capture incredible images while gaining a deeper understanding of Portugal’s stunning landscapes, architecture, and vibrant culture.

John and Jennifer are adept with a variety of camera systems, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Fuji, and of course, smartphones. They will tailor their guidance to suit each participant’s gear and skill level, offering practical tips and techniques to enhance your photography while on location. Whether you’re shooting with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or smartphone, their expertise will help you improve your photographic eye and technical skills.

What are the accommodations like?

For the upcoming travel photography workshop in Portugal, accommodations have been thoughtfully selected to ensure comfort and an immersive experience. Participants can expect to stay in charming, hand-picked boutique hotels, each offering modern amenities and local character. These carefully chosen hotels offer a restful retreat and an authentic experience of the region’s culture and design.

Whether you’re unwinding after a day of shooting in Lisbon or soaking up the coastal beauty in the Algarve, each location has been selected for its unique ambiance and exceptional service. These boutique hotels offer a combination of relaxation and style, with cozy rooms, inviting atmospheres, and beautiful views that complement the local environment. Full details, including hotel names, room types, and amenities, will be shared before departure, ensuring all participants have ample time to prepare and make the most of their stay.

This attention to detail guarantees that your time spent between photography sessions will be equally enjoyable, allowing you to recharge in comfort while soaking up the local flair.

Will there be opportunities for one-on-one instruction?

Yes, our instructors offer one-on-one sessions to address individual needs and help you achieve your photography goals.

What should I pack for the workshop?

Bring comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes for walking, and your photography equipment. A detailed packing list will be provided upon registration.

Are meals included? What about dietary restrictions?

Yes, most meals are included, as listed in the itinerary. We believe food is a huge part of the experience, and we curate exceptional dining experiences with local flavors.

We do our best to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions, but options may be limited depending on the destination and available resources. If you have strict dietary needs, such as gluten-free meals or severe allergies, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us before booking to discuss accommodations.

For travel to non-English-speaking areas, we recommend obtaining an Equal Eats card to communicate dietary needs clearly.

What are the group sizes?

We limit our groups to 16 participants to ensure an intimate travel experience and personalized, one-on-one photography instruction.

Will my guides know much about the places we are visiting?

Yes! While photography is the focus, we’ll be exploring historically and culturally rich locations, and our guides—led by John Devaney and Jennifer Heffner—bring an exceptional depth of knowledge about Portugal’s cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and hidden gems.

Not only do John and Jennifer know the best spots for capturing breathtaking photographs, but our Director of Experience, along with our expert local tour guides, will ensure that every moment of your journey is extraordinary. Together, they’ll offer a seamless experience, guiding you through Portugal’s most captivating locations and ensuring that you gain a deeper understanding of its beauty and history while capturing stunning images along the way.

Do I need to be a photographer?

Not at all! While the trip is designed for photography enthusiasts, you do not need to be a photographer to join. Many of our participants are travelers who simply enjoy capturing memories and experiencing a destination in a deeper, more immersive way.

Who typically joins these trips?

Our groups are usually a mix of solo travelers, couples, and friends who share a love for photography, travel, and cultural exploration.

What does "Double Occupancy" mean?

Pricing is per person based on two travelers sharing a room. If you’re traveling solo but open to a roommate match, let us know at booking.

What if I prefer my own room? What is a "Single Supplement"?

If you prefer a private room, a Single Supplement fee will apply. This fee varies by trip, and availability is limited, so please inquire at the time of booking.

Do I need trip insurance?

We strongly recommend protecting your travel investment by purchasing a trip insurance policy that includes ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ and emergency evacuation coverage. Life happens, and travel insurance can provide you with trip cancellation/interruption, travel delay, medical expenses, emergency assistance, air flight, baggage, and baggage delay coverages. Medical coverage purchased with your policy is crucial and required if you do not have health insurance.

What about non-photographer spouses/partners/friends?

This is a great experience for couples or a group of friends, even if not everyone is a photographer. This trip will be a blast whether or not everyone wants to participate in all the itinerary activities.

That choice is yours.

Please note that trip prices are the same for all participants regardless of whether you are actively photographing.
